Tasks
For the last 25 years, the Institute of Theology and Peace has been providing access to classical works on the ethics of peace associated with such names as Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, the early-modern Dominican theologian Francisco de Vitoria right through to the Jesuit Francisco Suárez and the Popes of the 20th century such as John Paul II. The product of this works has meanwhile grown to become a highly reputable library on the tradition of the ethics of peace, encompassing in excess of 20 volumes. Work is ongoing on an investigation of the sources of this tradition in the ancient world, and, more specifically, on the writings of Cicero as well as on the theological-philosophical debates of Gregory the Great through to Bernhard von Clairvaux dating back to the Early Middle Ages.
Work will be carried out over the next number of years in collaboration with Prof. Matthias Lutz-Bachmann from the University of Frankfurt / Main on relevant de lege and de iustitia [on law and justice] tracts taken for the comments of Francisco de Vitoria, and the fruits of that effort are to be made accessible in the form of a fromman-holzboog Verlag publication.
